It’s the height of summer, and that means (apparently) a ton of tart, fruity beers and gently hopped fruity beers and heavily hopped fruit beers… you get the point. For me, very little can replace a beer flavored beer on a hot day. During the recent festival, I was able to have the new DelMarVa Pils from Evo and drink it all day because it was refreshing, low alcohol and beer flavored. I have a very, very low tart tolerance, which is too bad for me, because there are a ton of great beers out there that range from tart to sour. I did have a blood orange sour beer that was pretty good because they hid the sour with the almost cartoonish sweetness of the blood orange.
In other news this week, we give another shoutout to Patrick McGovern who is having a busy month being the Indiana Jones of Beer, and also continue our discussion of foods and pairings with one normal one (pizza) and a lesser known pairing preference, olives.

Bring on summer drinking

I was at the Bunt Hickory Brewery in Kennesaw Georgia over the weekend. The brewery had eight beers on tap: A stout, two IPAs and five sours. It was pucker city, but the beers were good. There was a distillery down the block, so I got my fair share of drinking done that afternoon.

And of course there is plenty of local fruity beer…

Speaking of Dogfish Head…

Ancient Ales in the news

At this point, we may as well just make this a recurring segment wherein we talk about the comings and goings of our favorite beer biochemist.

Tasting recommendations for the week and beyond…

I hope to put together a beer and olive tasting event this fall. I (foolishly) thought that I was among a pretty small minority that wanted to help highlight how awesome olives went with beer, I was clearly wrong…

And of course, there’s pizza…

notes from the weird science desk…

This isn’t quite new, but it is a different application. This story was first reported on the Gastropod podcast last year, and we talked about it a bit here. Seeing it narrowed for beer, though, is cool…
